19th century American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born on this day in 1807. He was the most popular poet of his day and viewed by contemporaries as the most distinguished poet the United States had produced. His best remembered poems include Evangeline, The Village Blacksmith, The Song of Hiawatha, and The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. In addition to his lyric poems Longfellow was the first American to translate Dante’s Divine Comedy.
