J.R.R. Tolkien, the father of modern fantasy literature, was born on this day in 1892. His best known works are The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and have been not only immensely popular, but have changed the entire field of fantasy while inspiring an outpouring of works by other writers. A BBC survey in 2003 found The Lord of the Rings Britain’s “best-loved book.” Although Tolkien sold the film rights to Hollywood in 1968, it wasn’t until 2001 that the first of the trilogy of Academy Award-winning movies of The Lord of the Rings appeared.
