Stephen Jay Gould

Russian physician and author Anton Chekov was born on this day in 1860. Chekov once said, “Medicine is my lawful wife and literature is my mistress.” He nevertheless was second only to Leo Tolstoy among Russian writers of his day. Raymond Carver has called Chekov the “greatest of all short story writers.” Chekov is probably best known for his plays Uncle Vanya, The Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard. In these plays he uses a stream of consciousness technique to create a “theater of mood’ in which he “submerged life in the text.”
