The American novelist and short story writer Edith Wharton, the first woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, was born on this day in 1862. Wharton was a close friend of novelist Henry James and President Theodore Roosevelt. Dramatic irony was a key feature of her novels including The House of Mirth and The Age of Innocence which won the 1921 Pulitzer. She published an autobiography A Look Backward.
