South African novelist and political activist Alan Patton was born on this day in 1903. His book Cry the Beloved Country was documenting the racism, discrimination and exploitation which would give rise to apartheid was published in 1948, the year the South African government enacted the first apartheid laws. In 1953 Patton was a founder of the South African Liberal Party which was later outlawed by the apartheid government. He wrote two memoirs Towards the Mountains and Journey Continued.
